When I traveled to Egyptia (Egypt) I was completely and utterly inthralled. I had dreamed and imagined what this far away place would be like ever since I was a little girl. My Mom made sure I knew of the Dynasties from a very young age. I even had coloring posters of the Deities like Maat, Isis and Osiris on my bedroom walls. So, when I finally had the opportunity to travel to this sacred land in 2006 with the Sankofa World Publishers I was beyond excited and anxious about what the experience would be. From day 1 I walked tombs, temples and valleys of Kings, Queens and Priests who ruled and built civilizations thousands of years ago. I sailed up and down the Nile River from Cairo to Nubia on a luxurious cruise ship stopping off to places like Elephantine Island where the smell of Jasmine flowers hit me as soon as I stepped off the ship and Luxor where there were huge columns carved with papyrus and lotus petals to represent the Upper and Lower regions of Egypt. I flew to remote locations like Aswan and Abu Simbel to visit the monumental temples of Ramses II and Queen Neferatari (a perfumer). It was all so overwhelming and absolutely MIND-BLOWING.
There was a point when I became ill and was unable to eat. When I recovered I was only able to eat melons. For the remaining 10 days of a 15 tour my body lived off of pure alkaline food and my senses and awareness became heightened. My sense of smell, in particular, seemed to be on steroids. I would sit in the middle of the desert outside of pyramids and sacred temples and as the wind blew I could smell spices, resins and florals. I had no idea where these smells were coming from, because after all we were in the desert, but they were real, at least to me.
During our trip we would stop to ornate fragrance houses and night bazaars where the libraries of essences were vast and immeasurable. I smelled as much as I could and brought back as much as I could, Lotus, Papyrus, Jasmin, Peppermint, all pure and amazing.
When I returned to normal life in the states, I became depressed. I missed my precious Egyptia. I felt as though I were ripped from my far away home. I would close my eyes and could still smell those essences even when I did not have what I returned with anymore. It was then that I decided I needed to recreate my experience through fragrance. I had already begun experimenting and blending to perfect a formula made with shea butter and oils to create a deep moisturizer for my chronic dry skin and ashy legs. It made perfect sense to learn how to make fragrance and combine the two for the ultimate 2-in 1 moisturizing body fragrance that I so needed in my life. I researched and took classes for about two years. I bought raw materials and practiced over and over until I created blends that reminded me of my adventure in Egyptia. And so, Butter By Keba was born.
Today I bring you this line of travel colognes made with the memories of my travels to Egyptia still engrained in my heart and mind.
