Mindfulness Meditation: Why You Should Keep Doing It
Do you feel like you could use a change? Are you stressed out? Guess what? Meditation can help lower your blood pressure, calm your muscles, your breathing, and allow you to focus on the present moment. Mindfulness, which is simply being completely aware and accepting of the present moment, is a tool we can employ to help alleviate our stress and anxiety. By bringing your focus back to this very moment – these very breaths – you can refocus your attention and feel more grounded and centered.
I’m a big believer in the power of meditation to improve focus and self-awareness. My own experience is that I’ve become a more productive, less stressed person as a result of being more mindful. Don’t get me wrong, it is a daily decision to meditate which is sometimes challenged by outside distractions like my phone or a book I’d like to finish before starting the day. However, I make and take the time to devote space and a moment to be still. And, research seems to back this up: Studies have shown meditation may reduce anxiety, stress and slow the rate of cognitive decline as we age. Meditation may help us maintain a healthier weight, lower blood pressure, boost our immune system, and improve our sleep quality. Meditation isn’t just good for our minds — it also benefits the body.
